Immunisation guidance for employees

As part of the onboarding process you are required to complete a new employment assessment.  This allows Occupational Health to advise on your fitness for role and any adjustments or support which may be required. 

If you are due to work in a health or social care role, requiring face to face patient contact, you may also require vaccinations and/or evidence of immunity to;

• Hepatitis B, as a minimum this may include;
  • A primary course of 3 vaccines 
  • A blood test to evidence immunity 
  • A 5 year booster
• Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccination
  • 2 doses OR
  • Evidence of immunity to measles and rubella via a blood test
• Tuberculosis, dependent on age either; 
  • BCG Vaccination
  • BCG scar Check
  • A blood test showing exclusion of latent TB
• Chickenpox (varicella) 
  • Self declaration of previous infection or
  • evidence of immunity or
  • evidence of 2 varicella vaccines
• You must also ensure you are up to date with all routine UK immunisations via your GP surgery, this includes diptheria, tetanus and polio.  

If you have been contacted to supply immunisation records this is what we require.  

Not all patient-facing roles require clearance for Exposure Prone Procedures (EPPs).  

EPPs are those procedures where the worker's gloved hands may be in contact with sharp instruments, needle tips or sharp tissues (e.g. bone or teeth) inside a patient's open body cavity or wound, where the hands or fingertips may not be completely visible at all times. A sharps injury to the healthcare worker undertaking an EPP may result in the patient being contaminated with the blood of the healthcare worker, with risk of infection.

If your role has been deemed to include EPPs you will need to attend for a blood test for; 

Hepatitis B Infection, Hepatitis C Infection and HIV.  

The presence of these conditions does not necessarily been a total exclusion from EPPs.  Up to date guidance from the UK Advisory Panel for Healthcare Workers Living with Bloodborne Viruses (UKAP) will be considered and you will have a consultation with an Occupational Health Physician.  

If you have recently qualified as a Nurse, Doctor, Physiotherapist, Radiographer or other Allied Health Professional your University will have ensured that you received the above vaccinations.  Please contact their Occupational Health Department to obtain a copy of your immunisation history.

Your previous employer(s) may have provided Occupational Health services which include immunisation and screening.  Please contact your most recent employer(s) OH Department and request a copy of your immunisation record.

The Government were introducing legislation which required all Healthcare Workers to demonstrate, as a condition of deployment (i.e. employment) that they have received a primary course of coronavirus vaccines (minimum of 2 doses).  This legislation was not implemented but many employers have continued to require evidence of immunisation so they can use this in their pandemic preparedness plans and local risk assessments.  

Therefore, you may be required to evidence your coronavirus vaccination history.  Please follow the following guidance.  

1. Open NHS App (or else register for the App, then commence step 1)

2. Select NHS COVID Pass

3. Get your NHS COVID Pass - Continue

4. Select Travel

5. Either; 

Click on Download PDF Copy - save the document

I do not have access to the NHS App – what do I do?  If you are unable to access the NHS App, you can apply for a letter detailing your vaccination history on-line via the link below or by telephoning NHS COVID Pass service on 119. In the first instance you should discuss this with your new or prospective employer so they may complete a referral to Occupational Health.  If you do not wish to do so or are completing a new employment assessment then please clearly indicate this on the form so Occupational Health can contact you to discuss.
